WHAT IS MEDICAL WEIGHT LOSS?
Medical Weight Loss, also known as Physician Supervised Weight Loss, is the process of losing weight with the help and guidance of a doctor through diet, fitness, and healthy behavioral changes. It is weight management based on medical scientific evidence that targets the root causes of obesity and weight gain.

Does Phentermine work for Weight Loss?
Phentermine is one of the most popular weight loss drugs in the world. Several clinical studies have proven that phentermine can boost fat loss. The expected average weight loss with phentermine use is 5% of your initial body weight. Yet, over 12 weeks, it can be as high as 10%. This equates to a weight loss of 10–20 pounds (4.5–9 kg) for a 200 pound (90.7 kg) person ( 8 )
A large study found that 75% of people taking phentermine/topiramate over a year lost at least 5% of their body weight, compared to 23% of people taking a placebo.
How well do weight loss medications work?
Prescription weight loss drugs approved for long-term use (more than 12 weeks) produce significant weight loss compared with placebo. The combination of weight-loss medication and healthy lifestyle changes results in greater weight loss than lifestyle changes do alone.
Who is a candidate for weight loss medication?
Doctor Tamayo may consider a weight loss drug for you if you haven’t been able to lose weight through diet and exercise and you meet one of the following:
- Your body mass index (BMI) is greater than 30.
- Your BMI is greater than 27 and you have a serious medical problem related to obesity, such as diabetes or high blood pressure.
What is Ozempic?
Ozempic (semaglutide) injection is a once-weekly noninsulin medicine that, along with diet and exercise, may help improve blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes.
It belongs to a class of medications called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists, which mimic the hormone GLP-1 in your body to lower blood sugar levels after you’ve eaten a meal. But studies suggest that it may also help people without diabetes lose weight.
Can Ozempic help you lose some weight?
Yes. It is a medicine for adults with type 2 diabetes that, along with diet and exercise, may improve blood sugar. While not for weight loss, Ozempic may help you lose some weight. It was shown to help people lose more weight than other type 2 diabetes medicines.
Is Ozempic FDA approved for weight loss?
Ozempic is currently under review by the FDA as a once-weekly shot to help people lose weight when used in combination with diet and exercise.
How is Ozempic used for weight loss?
Ozempic works by mimicking a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) that targets areas of the brain that regulate appetite and food intake.
GLP-1 agonists like Ozempic help to control your blood sugar. GLP-1, the key hormone involved, slows down how fast your stomach empties food (called gastric emptying). And in addition to causing your pancreas to release insulin, it also blocks a hormone that causes your liver to release sugar.
Together, these functions can help you feel less hungry, causing you to eat less food and lose more weight.
How does Ozempic help you lose weight?
In separate research known as the SUSTAIN clinical trials, participants who took Ozempic experienced weight loss due to improved blood sugar control, reduced appetite, and a decrease in food cravings.
Semaglutide 2.4 mg demonstrates superior and sustained weight loss versus placebo and in addition a 17.4% weight loss after 68 weeks in STEP 4 trial

But the dosing being studied for weight loss is 2.4 mg once weekly, which is currently higher than the doses approved in diabetes. What’s more, it’s being studied in a different population: people with a body mass index (BMI) greater than or equal to 30 kg/m² alone or 27 kg/m² with at least one weight-related comorbidity (diabetes excluded).
